if u follow me on instagram (@p_e_n_g), u might have noticed my studiomates and i have been doing these somewhat-daily sketches and we take turns coming up with the topic that day. it's been a good exercise for me so i'm not constantly drawing only stuff i want to draw. and since we all agreed that these would be in color, it's forcing me to work a little faster at these concepts. we've only just started a couple weeks ago. i hope this goes on but as the year goes on and we get inevitably busier, i'm guessing they won't be as frequent. having said that, i'm really enjoying them, despite how hard some of the topics are for me.

with all of these, i've gone straight digital. no sketches on paper. it's something that i'd like to get used to doing, especially for these concept or character designs. it's also a good way to practice sketching more than one idea. if there's anything that i've learned from my online classes, it's to draw more and not settle for the first thing that comes up. that's a huge struggle for me. when i force myself to try again on a concept, i can break out of what i would normally do. even if i go back to my first idea, at least i know i tried a few different ways.

struggle

[listening to "song of the sea" soundtrack]

been doing a lot of Rey sketches lately as i try to get back into drawing in 2016. i've seen so many great Rey fanart floating around the internet and i really wanna add to that dialogue properly. but since i'm a little rusty, these will have to do for now.
the first one was done completely digitally. no sketching on paper at all, which is something i've been struggling with. i'm working on getting more comfortable sketching on my cintiq but i can only do that with more practice. this rey doodle is the first art i've done in 2016. gotta hand it to JJ Abrams & Star Wars to turn this previous-skeptic into a real fan.
the second is just a quick pencil doodle i did on some random sheet of paper i found around the house. if ur not that familiar with the original star wars trilogy, don't worry, i wasn't either. but i did remember that little crappy red droid that Luke was about to buy before he bought R2D2. my hubby showed me that in some comic it actually has a name - Skippy. and since Rey is a scavenger of old mechanical relics, i thought it'd be neat to have her find a piece of it. probably wouldn't fetch her any portion of that insta-bread tho. the struggle is real on jakku.

silhouettes

[listening to "heartbreaker" by justin bieber]

i've finally been able to get back into drawing after the holidays. it's tough to start up again after weeks of not drawing. i'm finally starting my online Schoolism class again. and since i'm determined to take the class seriously, i'm going to post my assignments on here to keep myself honest. i may not have the ability to take a real class at a real art school or up & move to california, but i'm gonna do the best i can.
so this assignment was to create Jekyll/Hyde characters and come up with silhouettes for each one. i knew that my Dr. Jekyll was going to be a mousy, smart, awkward scientist chick so that's what i was trying to come up with. in my mind, she's a lot like the Molly Hooper character from BBC's Sherlock series - hopelessly in love with someone who doesn't see her. but when it came to her Hyde counterpart, it evolved. initially she was going to be this dumb knuckledragger but it took a huge turn, possibly thanks to all the Downton Abbey i've watched lately. so now she turns into this busty, sexy, entitled bitchy woman - like a more intense Lady Mary Crawley (for anyone that watches downton abbey). she makes this concoction that she takes in the hopes to become sexier and more confident to gain the attention of her love interest as well as respect from others.
i'm excited to see if the class lets me explore these characters more.

happy 2016

[listening to "put your hands where my eyes could see" by busta rhymes]

it's a new year and i've been taking it a little easy since Christmas. i drew all of these Holiday Sketch Sale commissions after finishing some prior commitments so i was pretty busy up until the holiday. but that doesn't mean i'm gonna slack off. i really appreciate all of ur support & i'm gonna keep working to be worthy of it.
i don't have any new art to post right now so here are all the commissions i drew! all of them were drawn with a combination of copic markers, colored pencils, a little white and black ink, and a touch of a brush pen. THANK YOU EVERYONE that participated! i was happy that folks were giving the gift of ART for the holidays!
