mermaids

[listening to "lose yourself to dance" by daft punk & pharrell williams]

just wanted to share one of my sketches from last week's sketch_dailies theme of MERMAIDS! which, u may or may not know about me, is something i couldn't pass up. i've been wanting to draw some mermaids with that weird fish look. i think they're called like tiger fish or something, but when i google that, this crazy monster-looking fish pops up too. so i'm not sure what the actual species of fish this is, but its those wild-lookin fish. =) anyways, i also just threw Dory in there from Finding Nemo cuz i love Disney stuff. i wanted to not draw Ariel (cuz i do that all the time) but something disney squeezed in there anyway. besides, i think Dory's a great secret keeper. mostly cuz she'll just forget. putting this mermaid next to Dory makes her a very tiny mermaid though, which wasn't what i was going for. but whatevs!

also, can i just say how flippin excited i am about how well our newest project Loki:Ragnarok and Roll has been received! the writer, Eric Esquivel, really has some great ideas and just the perfect amount of fun in his stories. nothing is too serious, nothing is too off the wall. and i think my hubby theFranchize is really enjoying drawing the pages. since the first issue came out last week, there's been some really great reviews on it from all sorts of places. here are a few links to reviews/previews -

the only bummer thing is that i noticed when we got our copies of the book that they didn't give me INKER credit. BUT they've since apologized (sincerely, even) and they promised to make sure it's fixed for the future issues. our local comic shop, Third Eye Comics, even made a whole row for the book and have been recommending it to their customers. gotta love that local comic shop love! we'll be doing a signing for the book at the shop on Mar. 8th so that's really exciting too!

dailies

[listening to "drunk in love" by beyonce feat. jay-z)

this year has started on fairly rough footing and i haven't been able to do much drawing. but i have managed to start participating in these sketch dailies. if ur twitter feed has any artists on it, then u probably know what that is. if not, it's just a twitter account (@sketch_dailies) and they suggest a new topic every day. i found out about it and figured i'd jump in since i could always use a suggestion when i do warm-up sketches. and i swear as soon as i jumped on, it's like the entire interwebs found out about it too. (not that i'm sayin they copied me, i'm just saying it seems we all found out all at the same time.) anyways, i've only been able to participate in a couple of em so far. thought i'd share em here.
i posted these on my instagram (@p_e_n_g) and twitter (@peng_peng) already, but these are unfilitered and uncropped. the topic one day the other week was "Robin Hood" and i had just recently watched the disney version of it (thanx Netflix!) so since i love Disney, i drew that version. and since i also love Merida and look for any excuse to draw her, that's how that happened. figured she wouldn't be cool with Robin Hood shooting for ladies' hands in marriage.
the other one is of kid Ursula for the "Ursula" day. i tend to forget that she used to live in the palace at one point in her life. so i wanted to draw her at a happier moment in her life. i put some "treasures" from the past in her treasure chest. i put the Queen of Hearts's crown and heart wand from "Alice in Wonderland," the evil queen's crown from "Snow White," Maleficent's staff and Aurora's crown from "Sleeping Beauty." and i'm not sure if anyone peeped, but i put "The Heart of the Ocean" necklace on her from "Titanic." that odd shape in the front is supposed to be the back of a mirror that she's looking at. i'm still having a hard time with perspective so i'm working things out with these sketches. some day i'll figure it out.

superb owl

[listening to "haunted" by beyonce]

trying something new this year. i've been tossing around the prospect of doing a web comic for myself but seeing as how i'm not really good at sequential art, i wasn't sure if it was such a good idea. then i see that some folks' webcomics are very simple and tell a quick snapshot of a story without being Jim Lee on sequentials.
so anyways, my idea was sort of a look at a day in the life of Peng (that's me!). now i tend to think my life is kinda boring/mundane. but i do have a tendency to dramatize moments in my day. who doesn't?! my dramatizations are far more interesting so this will be my outlet. also, i wanted to format it to this square cuz i really wanna post these on my instagram. (i'm thoroughly enjoying instagram these days.)
i just drew this with my copic pen and just like 3 hues of pinks and 3 hues of blues (and a couple colored pencils). but the scan always makes it look wonky. if i'm able to continue this, maybe i can finally start a tumblr page. u know, when tumblr is no longer cool. that's usually when i catch on to stuff. =P

bubblegum

[listening to Frozen soundtrack]

having finally seen FROZEN, i've decided that i like it! i'll have to watch it a few more times at home to know if i love it though. but i can say with some certainty that "Let It Go" song by Idina Menzel (not Demi Lovato cuz i'm not a fan of her voice whatsoever) is fantastic and she sings it with such power that it's hard not to get emotional. must be all that broadway experience. and the sequence - WOW! the whole movie really is probably the most gorgeous thing i've seen to date. i thought Jack Frost's swirly ice stuff was pretty but this is breathtaking. of course, i'm a fan of pretty swirly patterns. anyway, i digress. immensely.

SO, about the image above! =P this is a 2-part commission that i finished just like a month ago but was started around November. the holidays plus the whole hospital debacle really put a huge hold on completing this but the client has it now and all is right with the world! =) i posted the Princess Bubblegum half back in November when i finished it. Flame Princess was drawn and colored by theFranchize. wanted to show both halves now. all of this was drawn with copic pens, copic markers, some colored pencils, and some white gel pens.
