[listening to "caroling caroling" by nat king cole)
just wanted to wish you and yours a HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! i'll be spending some much-needed quality time with my family and i suggest you do the same.
every year the hubby and i take turns drawing our Christmas card and this was my year. so i went with the Gaylord Family Tsum Tsum collection! HAHA! i knew my pups would make for flippin adorable tsums but now that it's been realized i'm sad that it doesn't actually exist.
in case u were interested, here's a little insight as to why Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year! i'm Filipino and Christmas celebrations in the Philippines are a totally different beast than anywhere i know of. just how different? simply put, we start celebrating in September. yeah, it's that serious. since my family immigrated here, we've learned to celebrate American "holidays" like Halloween and Thanksgiving instead of Christmas for like 3 months. but best believe, as soon as Thanksgiving is over it is absolutely time for the Christmas tree & decorations to go up. (it was also a big shock and adjustment to learn that not everyone celebrated Christmas here.)
for us it's not about commercialism (altho, of course, presents are certainly involved). but as a nation of mostly Catholics, it's definitely about the religion. i don't get all swept up in buying the hottest toys for my nieces & nephews or getting the most expensive gadget or whatever for my husband. it's the spirit of Christmas, the goodness & generosity & hopefulness, that i love the most. if you don't celebrate or believe in Christmas, that's ok. but i think we can all agree that sometimes we need a reminder to be good to one another, no religious implications needed. it's easy to get lost in the negativity of the world. so if there can be a National day to celebrate the contributions of dead Presidents or a day to remind ourselves of the labor movements, then we could use a National day to remember to be kind to your fellow man regardless of race or religious beliefs. so, in that spirit, HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE!

holiday commissions
[listening to "the little drummer boy" by harry simeone chorale]
here are some recent holiday commissions i finished, just in time for the clients to have them for Christmas! i didn't do a holiday sketch sale this year like i've done before simply because i didn't really have the time to do a big batch before the holidays. i love being this busy with work but it leaves very little room for fun things. i've only had time to do a couple of commissions.
the first one is of these awesome ladies at New York Comic Con. it's actually a commission from NYCC that i still owed but luckily i have the most patient fans. they were dressed up as human Sailor Moon kitties. this was done completely digital from sketch all the way to finish.
the second is a half-body commission of Daenerys in this blue dress, as requested by the client. this one was done with mostly watercolors and some colored pencils. i've been forcing myself to use paint so i can make some cool original art. digital is still my #1 medium, followed by copic markers, but i've always wanted to learn how to paint, i just never did. the more i do, the more comfortable i get with it. one day....

holiday sale
[listening to "all i want for christmas is you" by mariah carey]
i'm running a holiday sale on my Etsy for the first time! the past couple of years i've done a holiday sketch sale but this year my schedule is just a tad too packed to draw a bunch of sketches and mail out before Christmas. so instead i'm trying out a coupon code for my Etsy! cuz i love Christmas and we all need a just a bit of help in our pockets this time of year.
from now until Dec. 20th, use code JINGLE2016 and get 30% OFF everything in my Etsy shop - https://www.etsy.com/shop/pengpengart! the discount is taken before shipping costs, i believe. again, this is my first time doing this so i'm still learning all this stuff. be sure to place your order before Dec. 21st in order to get your order before Christmas.
i've added my new mini artbook DAYDREAMS Book 3 on there for the first time as well as some prints that i made for CTN Expo last month. check out the shop and give the gift of art! and YES - i'm still including this free print with all orders in December. art for everyone!

new things
[listening to "what christmas means to me" by stevie wonder]
i've added a handful of new things to my Etsy today, like my latest Jack and Sally Sugar Skulls print and Ice Queen mini print. and for the first time ever, i've managed to make my latest mini artbook DAYDREAMS BOOK 3 available on Etsy. this is the book that i will bring with me to comic cons in 2017 but it was debuted at CTN Expo in Burbank just before Thanksgiving. i have a small handful left from the expo so i've put it up on Etsy.
you can now order it online and each one sold will include a small quick headsketch on the back of the book. it has character design sketches and exploratory sketches inside - 24 interior pages all in color.
also, since it's the holidays, and i love Christmas, all order in December will include a gift of this mini print of my Frozen Kids! please head on over to my Etsy and give the gift of art this year!

moana reward
[listening to "christmas lights" by coldplay]
so if u didn't already know, i LOVE the newest Disney movie Moana. i never thought i'd live to see the day when a girl that looks kinda like me could ever sit at the the Disney Princesses table. i always had to settle for Snow White, then Mulan, but nothing hits as close as Moana. and the movie was fantastic!
i decided to play with watercolors again and try out my new Aqua brush (this brush pen that u put water in). i can see using the brush at comic cons (if i ever ventured into doing watercolors at cons) cuz it's not messy at all. what better topic than Moana to try out colors made out of water. =D this is my original art reward for last month's Patreon reward. come and check out my Patreon and join us - https://www.patreon.com/pengpengart - to get monthly rewards like prints, comics, and maybe even original art!

time lapse
i have a Vimeo now! i have a handful of process videos of my work. whenever i figure out how to record what i do in photoshop, i'll post those too. head over to vimeo.com/pengpengart to see the ones i have up so far!
Silk process 1 from Penelope Rivera Gaylord on Vimeo.
this is the first of 2 time-lapse videos for this Silk commission i finished recently. this is after i finished the rough lines and now i'm drawing cleaner lines with my Derwent Inktense colored pencil that i love using. this particular color blends pretty good with my usual color palette when i color with Copic markers.
Silk process 2 from Penelope Rivera Gaylord on Vimeo.
this is the second one where i finish it up with copics. there's no sound on either of these so don't worry, it's not your volume. i haven't done enough research to see where i can get free music to go over my videos yet.
here's the finished product. i used acrylics and watercolors for the gray sides and teal lighting.

favorite time
[listening to "merry christmas, happy holidays" by nsync]
hey, i owe u a huge apology for the neglect. i'm not sure if i even experienced November cuz it kinda went in a blur. i do know i went to CTN Expo and Disney California Adventure. that much is certain. but the rest of November i either can't remember or prefer to forget. and now, it's officially Christmas time for me. my absolute favorite time of the year. no more comic conventions for the rest of the year, i can sit and do work and actually finish things.
so CTN Expo was great as always. i came home with quite a few books to keep me inspired for another 12 months until next year, then i'm gonna need a re-up. i had these two new mini prints with me (images above) and will be bringing them to comic cons next year. it'll be interesting to see how many folks will pick these up at comic cons since they're not fan art. whenever it does happen, it makes me feel all warm inside to know that they appreciate the art more than the popular character.
i also made a brand new mini artbook, all new stuff that haven't been in any of the other books. lots of pre-lim sketches and even a little process shot of one of my pinups for the kickstarter we recently ran. i'll be bringing Daydreams Book 3 with me next year to comic cons as well.
thank u for sticking with me so far! i heart u all.

halloween comic fest
[listening to the nightmare before christmas soundtrack]
it's almost halloween! i'll be at Third Eye Comics in Annapolis, MD this Saturday Oct. 29th from 11am-2pm for their Halloween Comic-Fest! i love hanging out with the cool folks from the comic shop and they know how to throw a party for their customers. i've never done their halloween event before so i'm not sure exactly what to expect. but if it's anything like their free comic book day, it's gonna be fantastic.
i'll be bringing just a handful of my prints and comics. since it's a short day, i won't be doing any sketches at the event unfortunately. but come on by and say hi! i'll be there with my studiomate and BFF bryan "flash" turner to rep IDSTUDIOS!
this sketch of the Mayor from Nightmare Before Christmas was done last week as a cool-down from many consecutive days of trying to meet deadlines on other projects. i used copic markers, my brush pen, and a little black and white watercolor for the background. but it's really a reward for one of my Patreon supporters. if ur interested in joining us, head to patreon.com/pengpengart. i even have time-lapse videos for them.

kubo
[listening to "notorious thugs" by notorious b.i.g. feat. bone thugs-n-harmony]
if you're going to be at New York Comic Con this weekend, come by my table in ARTIST ALLEY TABLE N13 and then check out the charity art auction that they'll be holding on Saturday evening of the convention. proceeds go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. last year my original of Supers Coffee Break went to a great home. i'm grateful for NYCC for letting me help them on their quest to raise money for such a great cause.
this year i decided to make this Kubo and the Two Strings piece for the charity. i used a combination of copic markers, colored pencils, inks, gel pens, and a little acrylic paint to make the whole thing. it's 11x14" on Bristol. i hope Kubo and his mom go to a good home as well.
i know people are expecting comic book-related pieces in this auction. and i'm sure they'll get tons of that. but i had to draw what i was feelin and Kubo was just a beautiful movie with a great story. so i guess, sorry not sorry on that. =)

halloween
[listening to "look into my eyes" by bone thugs-n-harmony]
sorry for super past due post. after we got back from Baltimore Con, i spent every single moment of every single day until last monday working on The Blueprint 2. but that's finally done, all the files have been sent to the printers, and we should be getting a proof on that soon.
afterwards, i've been playing catch up with commissions and things. however, i did manage to get a brand new piece done just in time for New York Comic Con this week!! this piece is somewhat of a recreation of a commission i did for someone earlier this year. i liked the way it turned out that i thought it would be great for this time of the year. plus, i love Nightmare Before Christmas so so much and i've wanted to draw it for a while. no better time than October!
this image is done completely digital. my lovely Patreon supporters got to see all the process shots. plus, after NYCC, they'll get to download a high-res file of a classic version of this piece (minus sugar skulls). if you want access to my process shots and high-res files and rewards, head on over to https://www.patreon.com/pengpengart and check it out!

art rewards
[listening to "thinking bout you" by ariana grande]
here are the giveaways for the month of July! i know it's way into August now, and i'm sorry for the super crazy delay. running the kickstarter, even when there are 4 of in the studio working on em, was super time consuming so my rewards have been sent out a little later. i try to hit the week following the end of the month to send them out. but here i am, 3 weeks into August.
this month, the original art is this 6x8 watercolor piece of Liv Moore from the "iZombie" tv show. it was a suggestion from one of my Patreon supporters and i just happen to really like the show. so yeah of course i'll draw her! then there's a fun pack of a comic that i've worked on, plus a mini print, plus a couple of stickers. and the other reward is an 11x17 premium print - this month is my poison ivy print! i love getting fun art stuff in the mail so i assume other people do too. hope they like it!
u wanna get some fun rewards and see my art process? join me on my Patreon!!!
don't forget guys, i have a Patreon page - https://www.patreon.com/pengpengart

blueprint 2 kickstarter
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/822502594/the-blueprint-2 |
please check out my studio's very first kickstarter campaign for an anthology book that we're putting together called The Blueprint 2! (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/822502594/the-blueprint-2) we've got 4 short stories in there and lots of vis dev artwork.
my story is called LITTLE DEVIL and it's co-created and written by my talented writer friends Susan and Jeffrey Bridges. i'm going to turn it into a mini webcomic which will come out about 4-6 pgs a month. then at some point, probably in about a year, i'm planning on collecting them to make a graphic novel. so this will be its introduction to the world!
we can't wait to get it into people's hands and we really wanna make it super amazing. if we manage to break the goal, i think we may even be able to turn it into a hardcover - but don't quote me on that just yet. lots of logistics involved in that, ya know. but that's the hope! we just want a great product that each of us would be proud to have at our table and if we can deliver that to our fans, that's all we can really hope for.
so please please consider backing the project. we've got super neat rewards that go from digital wallpapers, to stickers and pins, and all the way up to one-on-one commissions! and make sure u tell ur friends about it too!

kickstarter
[listening to "fun" by coldplay ft. tove lo]
so my studiomates Jerry Gaylord, Bryan Turner, and I are finally going to be doing our own kickstarter for our own project! all 3 of us have been part of other people's kickstarter campaigns before but this will be our first one for our own studio book! it's kind of a big step for us. we've spent so much time since we formed IDSTUDIOS trying to break into the comics industry and then recently the animation industry that we never really got to focus on our own projects. some of these stories have been floating around in our heads for nearly a decade now but this kickstarter book will give us the opportunity to finally make it happen. to find out more about the book itself, keep an eye on the studio's facebook page - facebook.com/identitycomicsstudio - as well as IdentityComics.com.
if ur one of my wonderful Patreon supporters, u've already seen these images. if not, these are the character designs for my portion of the kickstarter project. these are character designs for a story that i'll be doing as a mini webcomic called LITTLE DEVIL. i'm working on it with some very talented writer friends Jeffrey & Susan Bridges who have written some stories for Top Cow and are currently working with Valiant Comics on an audio drama! they write the words, i draw the pictures, and together we're gonna bring folks a cute all-ages comedy! i'm going to put the first 6 pages into the kickstarter and continue for about a year putting out a few pages a month. then eventually we'll collect the whole dang thing in a book and it's gonna be awesome!!
our kickstarter should be launched on or about July 11th! we'll be sending out an invite on our ID FACEBOOK PAGE as well as my own PENGPENGART FACEBOOK PAGE this week. if ur interested and want to support, please be sure to accept the invite and u'll be reminded about the launch date!!! i have excitement!!!

so i've finally uploaded all of my pics from the past 3 comic cons on my facebook art page! if u wanna check em out, just click on Photos and check out the Albums. and if u haven't done so already, please be sure to click LIKE and follow me!
i don't wanna throw tons of pics on here so i've picked just a couple of my favorite from each show. (well, maybe a little more than a couple.)
i've been busy doing a lot of other commissions and character designs for a personal project (which i will post about soon). i don't think i've ever been this consistently busy before. feels really good!

whirlwind
[listening to "i believe i can fly" by r. kelly]
it's been quite a whirlwind of a few weeks. went to 3 back to back conventions, took a mini 2-day vacation at Disney World, and then when i finally got home, my loyal computer Jarvis died on me! which was probably the biggest hit cuz i've had him for a little over 7 years. but i just got a new computer, Friday, and she's working out well so far.
i'm still gathering ALL of the pics from all of the conventions to post up here and on my PengPengArt facebook page. in the meantime, i just wanted to remind u guys about my PATREON PAGE! anyone that signs up until July, regardless of the support level u choose, will get a PDF of my 2015 artbook - Daydreams Book 1. i don't have any more copies of this book so this will be the only way to get it. i've also got loads of rewards with an eye towards making process videos to share with everyone in the near future! please check it out, consider the support or just spread the word!

maps
[listening to "dangerous woman" by ariana grande]
i just got back from Tidewater Comic Con and i wish i had time to post pics of sketches i did this weekend BUT i have 2 days to get ready for MegaCon this coming Thursday til Sunday! i have posted some of my favorites on my PATREON PAGE however so for my lovely supporters, u can check em out now. [side note - i think i'm gonna start posting these sketches to my PATREON PAGE during the convention, data network-permitting.]
so for MegaCon, all 3 IDSTUDIOS members will be there but they split us all up. sad face emoji. however, u can use the handy dandy map i've made to find us easily around the convention. i'll be in the Artist Alley - TABLE A201! i ran out of Superman & Wonder Woman prints and the Ariel print at Tidewater but i will have MOAR with me in Orlando. i'll have a few more of my prints, plus one new print of my little baby Rey pilot too! i'll be bringing books and doing sketches all weekend as well so i hope to see u guys out there!
in the meantime, please remember to check out my PATREON PAGE and consider the support. i wanna share so much stuff with everyone!
